Letterkenny Bus Station is a primary transit hub for Donegal buses. You can get there from the centre of Donegal in around 45 minutes by bus, either on Bus Eireann or Bus Feda Teoranta. The former leaves every hour or so, and the latter twice daily, both from Town Centre Stop 155821. These buses run from early in the morning till mid evening, with the last one departing for Donegal just before 22:00. Bus Eireann offers the more frequent buses to the city centre. You’ll find that these are relatively cheap buses too, so it won’t add much to your travel costs if you get to the station this way. You can also catch a taxi or drive there yourself, in which case the trip will take roughly 40-50min, following the N15 and then the N13.
Travelling by bus is a more relaxed way of getting around, particularly if the traffic is busy. It’s much more pleasant to sit back with a book or ear pods than to be the one at the wheel. You can also get some work done on your laptop on a bus if need be. It’s also often more cost-efficient too, particularly if you have a weekly or monthly pass. The fact that you won’t have to look for parking is another significant benefit. As many of you will be travelling in one vehicle, your total carbon emissions will be much lower than if each person drove to their destination. If you’re new to the place, travelling on Donegal buses is also so much easier than trying to follow directions or taking routes that aren’t optimal.
Letterkenny Bus Station is an important transit hub for the county, as there are no train services in the region. It’s the main Donegal bus terminus on Route 32, and is conveniently placed close to a taxi rank. It’s not a very big station, but it does have modern amenities like ticket machines. There are rest rooms for passengers and if you arrive by bicycle you can use one of the short-term bike racks provided. There is also a left luggage facility. The station was recently refurbished to double its original size, adding wheelchair access facilities and a tea shop, which has become very popular since. The station is owned by Bus Eirann, which combines its own facilities with that of the station.
As a small regional Donegal bus station, Letterkenny doesn’t have the extended opening hours of the bus stations in larger metropolitan areas, but they run consistently throughout the day. You can catch the first Donegal bus from here at just before 08:00, the No. 64, with buses running roughly every hour from then through until just after 21:00. They alternate between bus No. 64 and No. 480, so those are the ones for which to book bus tickets – the bus prices here are very reasonable. You’ll never have any problem catching Donegal buses from here, no matter what time of the day you arrive, through to mid-evening. These are all operated by Bus Eirann. Bus Feda Teoranta buses leave in the mid-morning, at midday, and in the late afternoon on Line 964.
You won’t need any form of identification to board a Donegal bus, as your ticket will suffice. It’s best to get it printed, either from a ticket office, ticketing machine, or if you’ve bought it online. You will need positive photo ID if you want to buy a travel card, however. If minors are travelling with people who are not their parents, you may also be asked to produce your ID on the train, so carry this with you just in case if you’re chaperoning a kid. And before buying your tickets, it’s always a good idea to check for cheap bus tickets for Donegal on momondo – you’ll often find some good deals.
