POPULAR TRAIN COMPANY | SNCF |
Toulouse trains will leave you at Toulouse Matabiau, within walking distance of the city centre and most of the town’s landmarks (including the banks of the River Garonne as it flows through Toulouse) – hop on a Velotoulouse bicycle, the first minutes are free; take a bus or a tram; or catch an underground train from Marengo Station in the Matabiau Station complex. The old part of Toulouse, also known as La Ville Rose (the Pink City) and the City of Violets is a bright, colourful array of rosy terracotta brick and elegant white stucco buildings, many with Parisian-style grey slate mansard roofs. There are frequent buses leaving the bus stops just outside the station, taking passengers to all parts of the city, including the imposing Saint Sernin Basilica, a Romanesque building and a miracle of Medieval architectural engineering, as well as being religiously significant. Toulouse is a blend of sophisticated style and scientific curiosity, as demonstrated by the range of intriguing, specialised museums, such as the Museum of Medical Instruments and the utterly engrossing Museum of Machinery. The railway station is close enough to allow you to pop into the town centre between trains, possibly to sample the world-famous toulousain sausage, either with chips or in a cassoulet.
Just arrived by rail to Toulouse Matabiau Station after getting cheap train tickets to Toulouse through momondo? You might need to leave your luggage at the station until you can check in to your hotel or simply in order to explore the city between trains. The train station has luggage lockers on the concourse and a luggage storage service in the Grand Orleans hotel, just opposite the exit, where you can store your bags for a few hours. Don’t forget, however, there is no access to the lockers late at night, so double check the latest pick-up time. There are also multiple commercial luggage storage options in premises near the station – book ahead online when you get your train tickets to Toulouse, perhaps.
Toulouse Station is a fin-de-siecle building housing a modern railway operation. It has an unaccompanied minors service, to escort children travelling on Toulouse trains by themselves, and assistance is available throughout the day for train passengers with disabilities who may need to use the lifts reserved for them. There is a waiting room with a small children’s play area and an area for recharging mobile phones and tablets to use before your train to Touluse. An unusual service in the waiting room is a short story dispenser – press a button and you will get a printout of a short story visible on the screen in front of you. Of course, there are ticket offices and machines, cash points, photo booths, accessible toilets, a first-aid post, a lost property office and a baby-changing facility. There are cheap and frequent buses from bus stops just outside the station, and there’s an Underground station where the A Line will take you to the hub in Jean Jaures Underground Station. There is a shuttle service to Toulouse Airport, which leaves from just outside the station, perfect if you want to take a train to Toulouse and then make the return journey by air.
If you travel from a country outside the Schengen area before catching a train to Toulouse, you need your passport, for crossing an internal border during your journey by rail to Toulouse. When travelling within France, carry your passport with you for identity purposes, as officials can ask to see proof of identity at any time. If you do not have ID on you, you will be asked to present it in the next few hours but there is always a risk of missing your Toulouse trains if that happens.
If you’re leaving from Rodez the lowest ticket price is usually about £2, from Marseille it’s about £47, and from Bordeaux it’s around £181.
