The capital city of Malé and nearby Hulhulmale are popular places to stay in Maldives due to the fact they are close to the airport and have good public transport links to other areas. Both cities have public bus services that are very affordable and run between both islands. To travel between various islands, you can catch ferries and taxi boats very easily in Malé where a regular service is in place costing only a few dollars. Some cheap hotels in Maldives can also be found in these areas, such as Dreams Grand Hotel and Dreams Relax Hotel in Hulhumale, whilst only in Maafushi can you find cheaper Maldives hotels than Malé and Hulhumale.
Scuba diving is a popular attraction in Maldives, a lot of hotels in Maldives provide scuba diving courses and trips as part of their services. Islands such as Dhigurah, Dhangethi and Maamigili, all located on the South Ari Atoll, are known to have whale sharks and manta rays frequent their surrounding waters all year round. There are also many resorts that specialize in diving trips, such as Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa, Lily Beach Resort and Medhufushi Island Resort. Maldives’ other main attractions is its array of stunning beaches. We recommend visiting Cocoa Island or Makunufushi, home to Como Cocoa Resort, a beautifully calm and delicate beach surrounded by crystal clear waters. Landaa Giraavaru beach, which is home to the Four Seasons Resort, has a long unique bank of sand that extends into the surrounding turquoise waters. And finally, the beaches of Baros Island are surrounded by clear waters and stunning coral reef, a great spot for a romantic dinner.
If you’re looking for a vibrant city to stay in while you’re in Maldives, then Malé is the place to be. Being the capital city, it’s amongst one of the top areas to visit in Maldives and it’s a must-visit if you enjoy your nightlife with plenty of bars and restaurants on offer. Staying at the Samann Grand Hotel is a good base as it’s also not far from the beach. Another island, Vihamanaafushi, is home to the Kurumba Maldives Resort, which has its own bar and club venue and is well-worth a visit. While you’re out and about, check out the Maldivian cuisine, local delicacies such as Mas Riha (Maldivian fish curry), Garudhiya (fish soup), Boshi Mashuni (banana flower salad) and Bis Keemiya (samosa) represent the rich and flavourful style of the cuisine.
You can find cheap hotels in Maldives in Malé, and as the capital city, it has its fair share of art galleries and museums. You can take advantage of a good deal at a hotel, such as The Park House, which is nearby the Maldivian National Museum, and enjoy finding out about the country’s rich history and culture. Alternatively, Malé can also offer up the National Art Gallery, which is walkable from the National Museum and is free to enter. A similar distance away is the Grand Friday Mosque, the biggest in Maldives, visitors are allowed to enter the mosque outside of prayer times, but photography is prohibited, and respectful clothing is a must. And finally, if you’re looking for more art, there is The Esjehi Art Gallery on the south-east side of the city, which only costs a dollar or two to enter.
