To catch a train from Cardiff to London, all you have to do is hop on a Great Western Railway train at Cardiff Central Station and you’ll be there in a relatively short time, arriving at London Paddington Station. On the way, you’ll pass through or make stops at several western England towns and cities. You’ll first go through Newport, crossing the River Usk in the city and on to the much larger River Severn separating Wales from England, where you’ll go over the Prince of Wales Bridge to Severn Beach on the other side. You’ll almost immediately come upon Bristol, with its maritime heritage. A little way farther along, you’ll travel through the green countryside of the southern edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, passing near Badminton. This will bring you to the city of Swindon, where the old train station is also the Museum of the Great Western Railway. After this, you’ll go through the scenic North Wessex Downs area, another natural heritage site, before passing through Reading. From here on, you’ll be in the Greater London Metropolitan Area, travelling through Maidenhead, Slough and Hayes, before ending your Cardiff to London journey at Paddington Station.
Cardiff Central isn’t a very large station, but it does have a variety of passenger services, if you’re travelling by rail from Cardiff to London. For food and drink, there’s a hot and a cold beverage machine and two fast-food outlets (one with seating and the other without). Baby change facilities are available, if you’re travelling with an infant. For travel and other essentials, you can shop at a small convenience shop or a newsagent. Cash machines are located alongside the main entrance of the terminal. There’s a left luggage facility, if you’re taking a day trip from Cardiff to London and want to travel light, and there’s several limited-mobility services available at the central passenger help point. Staff assistance is available during opening hours, seven days a week. Accessible ticket machines are provided, and there’s an induction loop. The entire station has step-free access, with train access ramps and impaired-mobility set down. Wheelchairs are available for temporary use at no cost. For cyclists, there’s a sheltered bicycle storage area with space for numerous bikes.
You, naturally, won’t need a passport to go with train tickets from Cardiff to London, as both locations are in the UK. You also won’t have to show any form of photo ID when you’re buying your tickets, whether that’s at the station ticket office, a ticket machine or online. Your credit or debit card details are all that will be required. It’s only if you purchase a long-term travel pass that you may be asked to produce ID. It’s also advisable for minors to carry ID with them on the train, especially if unaccompanied.
Arriving at Paddington Station after your Cardiff to London trip, you won’t be far from the centre of London. You can get there using two different types of public transport. Either catch the Line 7 bus (operated by London Buses) to Oxford Circus Station John Lewis, or the Bakerloo Underground train to Charing Cross Station. Both will take roughly the same amount of time to get you there. If you arrive at night, there’s a night bus on the N207 line – just take a short walk from Paddington to Lancaster Gate Station to catch it. Your travel time will again be about the same.
